Sea, the Great National Purpose
At a time when it was approved the national strategy for the sea, document essential for this to become effectively the National Plan, it is important to reflect on a local perspective.
Each of us has to ask yourself: what can I do? Where I can be important in this direction that the country wants to follow? Is this a question so hard to answer?
I don't think so!
If we accept that all parties do, it's easy to see that any our action will have repercussions in the process. If each of us does ECO of little, or a lot, you know, we believe that we will end up with scourges as the waste in the sea, or, in another framework, with the non-sustainable use of marine resources.
The project Life Eco Compatible gives us an opportunity to be part of this chain of change. Be stakeholder of this project answers the question: what can I do?
Director of the Madeira Natural Park
The project Life Eco compatible has the sponsorship of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic
Since August 2013, the project Life Eco compatible has the sponsorship of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic.
Upon coming to the Nature Reserve of Selvagens Islands in last July, His Excellency the President was aware of this project noting the presence of in situ ocean waste resulting from anthropogenic action deciding to support good practice Eco Compatible by giving your individual support and institutional support to this project.
This support is highly relevant and reinforces and recognize all the work that we have been developing to the date setting an example and providing a mark in comprehensive involvement of the entire society.
On January 28 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union the opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee on the ‘Communication from the Commission: Our life insurance, our natural capital: an EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020’.
In this document we can highlight:
“It is therefore of the greatest importance that the forthcoming political reform processes (e.g. fisheries, agricultural, transport, energy and cohesion policy) be closely linked to the biodiversity strategy.”
“There is a clear need for information and knowledge about biodiversity and its complex interactions with development and employment…”
Part 3 of the communication sets out a framework for action for the next decade, with six targets:
1: Fully implement the Birds and Habitats Directives;
2: Maintain and restore ecosystems and their services;
3: Increase the contribution of agriculture and forestry to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity;
4: Ensure the sustainable use of fisheries resources;
5: Combat invasive alien species; and
6: Help avert global biodiversity loss.
Here you can find the full document.
